Students raise more than $3,000 to fund clean-water wells in India PDF Print E-mail

As of May 15, students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater have raised more than $3,000 to fund wells in India as part of an effort by the Rotary India Water Trust to develop a sustainable water supply for 650 villages.

“I am pleased that we have not only met our goal of raising money for 10 wells, but have exceeded that goal,” Assistant Chancellor Student Affairs Barbara Jones said. “We are less than $200 away from our 12th well. This has been a wonderful learning experience for the students and we are so proud of their efforts.”

The fundraiser came in the aftermath of the April 16 boiler explosion, which left much of campus without heat and hot water for several days. Whitewater Student Government, the Student Entertainment and Awareness League and the Residence Hall Association decided this was a good opportunity to focus on the needs of others and began the campaign to build wells in India. The student groups hung posters that read, “Think not having a hot shower is bad? Try not having clean drinking water.”

“Although many of us were inconvenienced for a few days, it made many students realize just how much we take for granted,” Wells for India committee member Mike Baumhardt said. “The Wells for India Project is a teachable moment for many of us and proves that members of the Whitewater community are able to turn the event into something beneficial for others.

Nominations sought for second annual Whitewater Environmental Achievement Awards
Released: February 2, 2009

A Whitewater coffeehouse that encourages recycling and allows customers to buy coffee and supplies in an environmentally responsible manner, along with a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater professor who does volunteer work in local watershed management, were winners of the first Whitewater Environmental Achievement Awards in 2008.  The awards were so successful that they will be given out again this year.

Nominations are being sought for individuals, high schools or companies from Whitewater and the surrounding counties (Rock, Jefferson, Waukesha, Walworth, Racine and Kenosha) that have contributed to the achievement of environmental sustainability.

“We are, as a campus, committed to sustainability,” said K. Praveen Parboteeah, Environmental Achievement Award Committee chair and associate professor of management at UW-Whitewater. “We hope these awards show our commitment to sustainability and serve as an inspiration to others.”

New this year is the high school award.  It will recognize a high school project that has significant environmental and educational impact.  The award is open to projects led by the high school, an individual student or a high school class.  Examples of projects include a campus project to reduce energy use, a class project to conduct neighborhood energy audits, or tire inflation checks for all students and staff members.

“We realize that to get students thinking about the environment and sustainability issues, we need to start early on in elementary school,” Parboteeah said.  “This year we decided to start at the high school level because so many students already participate in projects like these at school.”

Award winners will be selected based on the originality, uniqueness and impact of their activities.  Nominations should be submitted by Tuesday, March 31, 2009, to:

Hyland Hall construction project a 'state model' for sustainability PDF Print E-mail
The new College of Business and Economics building was recognized as a state model for building recycling efforts during a talk and tour on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus Wednesday, July 23.   The university’s best recycling practices and commitment to sustainability were the focus of the event, which was hosted by WasteCap Wisconsin.

Private contractors, state agencies and architectural and engineering firms participated in the talk and tour, which included a visit to the Timothy J. Hyland Hall job site.

“UW-Whitewater’s commitment to sustainability is reflected by the success of the Hyland Hall construction project in minimizing the amount of construction waste that is actually landfilled,” Randy Marnocha, vice chancellor for administrative affairs, said.  “Being chosen as a site to host WasteCap Wisconsin’s Talk and Tour Series is an honor provided only to projects with the most successful waste reduction strategies.  The joint efforts between the university, the Division of State Facilities, Miron Construction and WasteCap Wisconsin deserve commendation.”
